Customization of our desktop

It is now up to us to customize the desktop.

I will be using the following assets

  1. Sardi icons from sourceforge
  2. Sardi extra icons from github
  3. Surfn icons from github
  4. Plank themes from github
  5. Aureola conky from github

and all the scripts to install any of the above and all the applications we need to work and play from this github.

Content of the tutorial

We will first follow the tutorial how to install Gnome and then we will install Budgie afterwards.

We will go to the github of AntergosBudgie and download the installation scripts. Scripts or files are just a collection of terminal commands, you would type to install software, pasted in one file.

Tip : you can fork my github and change the scripts to your liking

More info about forking.

Follow and install the scripts. You will receive an explanation about the contents of the scripts.

Personalisation of Antergos Gnome

These elements will be useful also on Antergos Budgie.

Some of these scripts can be useful for you. I leave it up to you to examine if you like to install them. The scripts are in the folder Personal.

Follow the explanations about the scripts.

  • creation of folder in order to copy/paste preferences to it
  • same bookmarks on any distro
  • keyboard shortcuts are going to be the same on any distro
  • gnome-screenshot save as jpg rather than png
  • gimp scripts and themes
  • sublime-text preferences
  • variety preferences
  • arc colora themes

Customizing Antergos Gnome

This tutorial can be skipped as the intention of the article is to work on the BUDGIE environment in the future.

We have installed all elements for our tweaking exercise like icons, themes, cursors, wallpapers etcetera.

The Gnome Tweak tool is one you will need always. Put it in Favorites.

Selecting a personal colour of the Arc Theme : Arc Dark Crimson.

Changing the icons via gnome tweak to sardi icons or surfn icons.

Choosing the breeze-snow cursor.

What is a shell-theme? – improving the css of Arc – make the font bigger

Fixing one icon that is looking out of place. It is not following the Sardi or any icon theme : Contacts

Variety is providing us with beautiful wallpapers from desktoppr.co.
We will use variety to change and get new wallpapers. More info about all the tips on variety.
Variety indicator is in the bottom left.

On this distro it seemed overkill to use plank. But you can. You can change the theme of plank (100+ themes).

We will start the conky and change the image of the Aureola Acros conky and use the gray version of the conky.

Gnome Tweak tool is super interesting.

Removing the icons on the desktop but being able to create folders and documents on the desktop.

Changing the font is important : choosing Noto Sans Regular

Deleting the workspaces.

Gnome extensions

This tutorial can be skipped as the intention of the article is to work on the BUDGIE environment in the future.

We can improve gnome even more by installing extensions written by users. You can go over them at https://extensions.gnome.org. Google for the best ones or sort by popularity or downloads. It gives us some indication.

We have installed

  • glassy gnome
  • netspeed
  • dash to dock

It only takes time to find the best extensions out there. I found an extension that can make the top bar transparent.

  • dynamic panel transparency
  • coverflow alt tab
  • system-monitor

We will also show you how to install a gnome-terminal that is really transparent (background). Showing you how the variety custom keyboard shortcuts work to change wallpapers or trash them.
